Contra Dances and Communities of Western North Carolina, Tennessee and Upstate South Carolina
Have a dance in the Asheville Area? Let me know and I will feature it here.
Greater Asheville:
Old Farmers Ball
Dance every Thursday with the Old Farmers Ball at Fairview Community Center. The dance is traditionally held on the campus of Warren Wilson College. Last Spring the ceiling fell in (no one was in Bryson Gym at the time) and the dance moved to an outdoor Pavilion on campus. When the weather got too cold, the OFB moved to Fairview, but expects to return to WWC when the gym is repaired.
Grey Eagle
The contra scene swings on Monday nights at the Grey Eagle in Asheville (185 Clingman Ave). Hosted and organized by Jeff and Diane Baker as a labor of love. Check the OFB's schedule for details on
bands and callers at Grey Eagle, as well.Near Asheville:
River Falls and the Harvest Moon Folk
Harvest Moon Folk holds dances at the wonderfully rustic River Falls Lodge on three Saturdays a month. The lodge is nestled in a lovely wooded area with a lovely stream close to Gap Creek State Park, SC. There is also an "Advanced Dance" on one Friday of the month. The Harvest Moon Folk also hold Wednesday dances at the Y in Greenville and the very popular Moon Dance, a dance weekend held every September at Table Rock State Park, SC. Details.
Historic Jonesborough Dance Society
Ashevilleans can be frequently found slight farther afield in Jonesborough, Tenn. The Historic Jonesborough Dance Society (HJDS) usually dances at the town's community center where a brand new wood floor, Klondike bar breaks (and air conditioning in the summer) make the dance even more popular. Organizer David Wiley also makes our
regional contra scene swing with a Contrathon twice a year. Dancers swarm to Glendale Springs for these popular day long dances on the Sundays of Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekends. Check the site for details on yet another event, Jonesborough Days, and a new dance weekend planned to "bookend" with the Storytelling Festival. David Wiley never stops!
